It is an absolute pleasure to welcome DJ Phunkn to the Kut Above Crew and to celebrate, we will be adding some of his stellar club, funk & disco mixtapes to the Kut Above Mix Archive over the coming weeks and months.

To start with we have his Funk’d Up Disco – Flashback Vol. 3 Mix.

A delicious blend of old and new that traverses classic flashbacks and blends them with more contemporary and dance-floor ready nu-disco remixes, many of which that are his own productions.

With gigs at the Alexandra Hills Hotel expanding from Friday nights to both Fridays and Saturdays, Mr Phunkn will be sharing the resident duties with yours truely (Dastardly Kuts) as we alternate between the two each week. If this mix is anything to go by, the punters frequenting the Alex when Phunkn is at the helm are set for a dancefloor fed with extra spicey servings of the most delectible funky nu-disco goodness on offer.

2026 is coming in HOT!

There are very few soloist performers in Brisbane that can encaptulate an audience like local legend and multi-talented musician Eddie Waldon. The way he skillfully uses his guitar to sound both hard & heavy rock and soulful smooth acoustic through the use of FX’s pedals that also incorporate a drum machine and his electrifying vocals is a sight to be seen and has earned him a cult like following.

I feel truley blessed to get the chance to support this man every Friday night from 8pm till close at the Alexandra Hills Hotel. The fact that this is in the very same area that I grew up, and the very same venue that broke my night clubbing cherry almost three decades earlier is super exciting but also somewhat surreal and having only recently stepped back into DJing after a multi year hiatus, it sure is nice to see my logo on a flyer again. I am absolutely chomping at the bit to share the stage and rock the dancefloor with this absolute living legend.

The Alexandra Hills Hotel also has a top tier restaurant, plenty of pool tables, Putt Putt Golf and a soon to be open Bowling Alley, so there really are plenty of options for everyone, young or old, to have a good time. My first set is this Friday the 5th of April so come join us for the best Friday night live music experience you’ll get outside of the City & Valley, with Eddie and I pumping tunes back to back from 8pm all the way through till 2am. Just remember that after 10pm you will have to leave the kids with a baby-sitter.

After picking up a smashing Dastardly Kuts DJ residency at Babylon on Eagle Street in my hometown of Brisbane, I thought I’d take the opportunity to start a new Kut Above Sessions live recorded Mixtape Collection.

This is Volume Two of the Babylon Sunset Sessions recorded live on Saturday the 18th of May 2024 with the beautiful Brisbane River as my backdrop and the spectacular setting Sun as the inspiration for this tasty selection of funky fresh beats.

After a rather unceremonial return to my hometown of Brisbane, picking up a residency at Babylon on Eagle Street Wharf is a positive step in the right direction for coming out of DJ retirement. As such, I thought I’d take the opportunity to start a new Kut Above Sessions live recorded Mixtape Collection.

This is Volume One of the Babylon Sunset Sessions recorded live on Friday the 12th of April, 2024 with vibes of new beginings and the infinite potential of love in my heart.

Returning from a year of living on Country and getting reacquainted with the Ancestors, Spirit, Cultural Ritual & Lore of our indigenous brothers & sisters, I was understandably a bit rusty in my first couple of transitions, but I soon found my groove and the Babylon punters found their dancing feet.

My last Sessions Mixtape Collection was released in 2019, not long before the World turned upside down with the Covid pandemic, so it feels nice to be back and live behind the decks and doing what I do best. Though it was a complete off the cuff freestyle mix that chops & changes genres frequently, I am pretty happy with how it turned out and feel it stands up pretty well against my other Dastardly Kuts live recordings from over the past 20 years.
